MBC - Расскажите про вашу группу. С чего началась история Scarlet Pills?

Дима: В не столь далёком 2006-ом, ещё существовал такой панк ансамбль,
как The Morons, образованный в 2002-ом неким Женей (нынешним гитаристом Next Round и Self Defense) и мной. На тот момент нам срочно потребовался бас-гитарист и первым кто откликнулся на наше объявление на мьюзикфорумс, был Никита. В скором времени The Morons оправдали своё название и развалились. После чего мы с Никитой и одним из бывших вокалистов виа Kongaz Korva собрали новую эмо\панк\скримо банду в которую спустя какое-то время нам порекомендовали Тиму. Ну и собственно, в начале осени 2007-го один мой друг барабанщик, предложил мне пойти вместе с ним попробоваться в один поп-панк проект с двумя девочками на вокале. Так я познакомился с Настей. В итоге по различным причинам долго никто в коллективе не задерживался - второй вокалистке тоже пришлось уйти, и я предложил Тиме и Никите, помимо нашего коллектива принять участие и в этом.С тех пор состав в отличие от названия больше не менялся. А все остальные наши сайд проекты довольно быстро сошли на нет.
Никита: Я бы проследил историю scarlet pills с тех времен, когда мыпознакомились с димой (февраль 2006).Было это примерно так: что-то около 4:30-5:00 утра, сплю, никого не трогаю. Проснулся от телефонного звонкаНа том конце что-то типа "здарова чувак! не разбудил?" я "вообще-то разбудил"..ну и дальше что-то про объявление на мьюзикформуз..всех подробностей беседы не помню, но Димину фразу на прощание помнюдо сих пор:"Жди звонка, как мяч пинка!")
Тима: а я то вообще, только только переехал в Санкт-Петербург (долго до этого не играл), и буквально через месяц меня свели с ребятами,так до сих пор мы вместе вдаряем по брутальным гуслям с парнями!!!))) ну а про то как уже собственно Scarlet pills собрали, Дима уже рассказал)

Как придумали название? Что оно означает?

Дима: Первым названием группы стало Party Boys, навеянное небезизвестным танцем Криса Понтиуса. Ближе к старту концертной деятельности оно нам перестало нравиться и после недолгого копошения в англо-русском словаре и демократического
голосования, новым названием группы стало Geneva. Но спустя год и его пришлось сменить на нынешнее и уже окончательное - из-за небывалой его популярности, как в мире так и даже в нашем родном городе. А название Scarlet Pills означает, видимо только то, что оно означает. Выбрано оно было по тому же приципу, что и предыдущее - главное чтоб нам нравилось и "звучало"

Помните ваш первый концерт?

Дима: Отлично помню. Это был бар-подвал на Фонтанке под названием "Weightless".
Играли тогда с уже не существующими ныне бандами сплошь состоящими из наших близких и не очень друзей. К слову в баре, естественно, были исключительно друзья. Был ужаснейший аппарат, звук, мизерная сцена и "ездящая" ударная установка. И как назло у меня сломался на гитаре вход. Играть пришлось на чужом инструменте, а это, знаете-ли, было дико неудобно во всех смыслах. Но зато у нас по случаю первого гига у всех были модные крутые причёски!
Настя: это был для меня вообще самый первый концерт, почти сразу же отключился микрофон, голос дрожал, но зато прическа была крутая
Никита: бочка ездила как ненормальная. И был еще какой-то добрейший мужик, артдиректор наверное, который после выступления какие-то приятности нам говорил: про Настину прическу и вообще)
Тима: как вчера было) кстати так установка не ездила по сцене нигде,
даже в вологде в последнем туре)))) никита героически держал всю установку!)
и гитарка у димы поломалась, была пауза большая, ну, на сколько помню было весело и все остались довольны)

Как бы вы описали свою музыку человеку, который вас еще не слышал?

Дима: Смотря какому человеку!Людям далёким от музыки думаю хватило бы и "гитарно-барабанного рока с девушкой на вокале". Не сильно любознательным, к первому определению я бы добавил: "Ну как Парамор примерно, или Аврилька".
Ну, а мне самому кажется, что наша музыка - это в общем-то, обыкновенный поп-панк в духе начала-середины нулевых, впитавший в себя как некоторые элементы новой школы так и просто периодически заигрывающий с другими стилями и направлениями
Тим: О! это я больше всего люблю, в общем как то так:"сначала так тыц тыц тыц, там тарелочки, счет, все дела, потом бум-бум так бас начинается, и гусли брутальные вступают, и кровь из ушей!!!! а потом настюха начинает и джинь джинь джинь и так бащ бащ бащ!!!!! и в конце бластбит!"(с) очень нравится это описание, правда я к нему
прибегаю крайне редко)
Никита: описал бы как "вот тебе ссылка. скачиваешь, слушаешь и сам решаешь, на что это похоже" ) а вообще наверное поп-панк/панк-рок

<<Мессадж>> вашего творчества?

Дима: "Мессаджа" определённого у нашего творчества, я думаю, нет. Какие-то песни имеют определённую или ярко выраженную социальную направленность, а какие-то совсем не имеют. Ну а вообще, вкладывать-ли смысловую нагрузку- "мессадж" в свою
вокальную мелодию, или просто рассказывать необременённую моралью историю, решает у нас Настя.
Ей и слово!
Настя: в некоторых песнях, как например в she или bad luck нет особого "мессаджа", просто маленькая история без мозговой нагрузки) а в песнях Truth, Dead, one day и т.д. описывается то, что происходит вокруг нас, и если почитать наши тексты то почти все
они имеют социальный "мессадж". Love is for pussies)

Расскажите о ваших музыкальных влияниях.

Дима: Более всего из панк рока и около, повлияли: Rancid, Alkaline
Trio, Jimmy Eat World, NoFX, Goldfinger, New Found Glory, Millencolin.
Из других жанров: Tequilajazzz, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Death
Cab For Cutie
Настя: Senses fail, Good Charlotte, Jimmy Eat World, FOB ,да много
групп всяких, так и не вспомнишь сразу
Никита: я соглашусь с предыдущими товарищами и добавлю еще and you will know us by the trail of dead, postal service... не знаю, насколько сильно они на меня повлияли, но нравятся дико)
Тима: ну, люблю всяческий/разный соул, фанк и все такое в духе, например, джеймса брауна. Из панк-рока ignite, nofx.
А tequilajazzz самые, пожалуй, влиятельные. Еще slayer и napalm death. Из старых, наверное, black sabbath и led zeppelin.

Чем занимаетесь вне группы?

Дима: Велосипед, барабаны, заработки, концерты
Тима: летом велосипед, зимой сноуборд, ну и работаю много...
Настя: учусь в универе, ничегонеделаю
Никита: пытаюсь/пытаемся делать концерты, работаю, строю (медленно, но уверенно) ячейку общества...вынашиваю план захвата какого-нибудь небольшого но прибыльного государства. Про велосипед чуть не забыл ;) спасибо парням, напомнили. А Настя, кстати, забыла добавить "выношу мозг окружающим"

Ваши планы на будущее?

Дима: В плане музыки - всё банально: сочинять и записывать песни до тех пор пока это представляется возможным, турить, заводить новых друзей.Быть может, сообразить на собственный лэйбл. В жизни тоже всё довольно скучно - любовь, семья, дружба ну и наверное своя собственная репетиционная точка, наконец. Ну, а в самых сказочных перспективах - студия звукозаписи. Ну ещё клуб было бы не плохо. И свой остров. И замок на нём..
Настя: "sing while i'm still young"
Тима: играть пока есть на то силы, радовать слушателей. ну и естественно обзавестись семьей, студию звукозаписи отгрохать,открыть небольшой паб с собственной пивоварней.
И собаку, такую, небольшую, как в фильме "Маска", Майло, помойму, его звали)))
Никита: победить в себе обывателя, двигаться вперед в плане музыкального развития...и точку, и свой лейбл, и клуб...и что-то мне подсказывает, что и
это нам предстоит делать вместе :)

Что бы вы хотели пожелать вашим слушателям?

Дима: Не бойтесь иметь обо всём своё собственное мнение. stay true!
Никита: хороших друзей
Тима: быть проще, быть добрей, и быть честней во всем, этого сейчас очень мало в людях...

Interview: Morgan Foster

Nick[MBC] - First of all, Morgan, please introduce yourself and tell us how you started as a musician.

Morgan Foster - I was given the name Morgan Mackenzie Foster by my parents on the morning of September 20th, 1991 in a town called Walnut Creek, CA, which is in the East Bay Area, roughly twenty minutes east of San Francisco. I've loved music for as long as I can remember. My adoration may or may not have started with an obsession with boy bands such as The Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, and Boyz II Men. I shall not confirm that statement for obvious reasons, and I'll say no more about that thought. What I will admit to is that without my brother Matt, who is an extremely talented musician (check out First To Leave, and his solo work as well), I would most likely know nothing about what many people, myself included, would consider good music. I would be exposed to bands like Saves The Day and The Get Up Kids subconsciously through him. Almost every band/artist I listen to now was shown to me by my brother, which I'm thankful for. So as I matured and began listening to said bands on my own accord I would already kind of know their songs in the back of my head, and it was just a natural thing for me to continue listening to them because I loved it. You could say music was engraved in me as a child. My mom had an awesome vintage guitar from when she was young which I would play around with because I wanted to be like Matt. My family has always been very supportive of my wanting to be a musician. I never really took guitar lessons or anything, I'd just mess around, ask my brother about certain things, or try to learn chords from the internet.

MBC - What are your main influences, musically?

Morgan - Oh man, so many. I'm fond of many types of tunes. I could go on and on and on about my favorite music, but that's not the question, so I'll have to save that for another time. As for artists that directly influence the music I make, the first one that comes to mind is Elliott Smith/Heatmiser. Back when I was maybe 14, my brother showed me Either/Or and that was the only thing I cared about for a while. Elliott was the first artist I heard that made me think, "Wow. This guy is absolutely unbelievable! How does I think of this stuff? I want to do what he's doing." Other musicians that I'm crazy about and make me want to write songs would be... Rocky Votolato, matt pond PA, The New Amsterdams, The Weakerthans, Wilco/Jeff Tweedy, Wintersleep, Maritime/The Promise Ring, Damien Jurado, Attack In Black, M. Ward/She & Him, Matt Costa, Jets To Brazil, The City On Film, and I've been really into Feist and Laura Gibson lately, I'm listening to Feist right now, and I have been all day. I love her. It's hard for me to make lists like this because I have so many influences that affect me much in the same way.

MBC - You are from Pleasant Hill, California, right? What do you think about it, about your local scene? Is it a good place to be a musician in?

Morgan - I'm actually from Walnut Creek, California, which neighbors Pleasant Hill, it's pretty much the same place though. I love it here, even if it is a little boring at times. However, we're close enough to Berkeley/Oakland and San Francisco where the music scene is much more alive, which makes it a great place to be because it's not as expensive on our side of the hill, and we can go over there to see all the cool shows. Eventually, I plan to live in Berkeley and be happy and awesome.

MBC - A lot of people know you as a good friend of The Story So Far. With which bands are you in good relations too?

Morgan - Yes, my good friends in The Story So Far have helped me very much by allowing me to do a split with them, taking me on tour, and showing my music to their fans. I am very appreciative of that. They're my best friends so it makes it easy for us to do stuff together and not make such a big deal out of it. We're just kids trying to have as much fun as possible and stay young as long as possible, as are many others are, I'm sure. Although I have a good amount of friends in sweet bands, TSSF is really the only band that I would say I have a strong relationship with.

MBC - Your two works, with Kevin Geyer and with The Story So Far, sound very interesting and at the same time every song differs from each other. I think that you are searching the best sound. How soon do you think we will be hearing your new material and what will it be like?

Morgan - Well, you are definitely right with your assumption. I'm still attempting to make a diagnosis on what I want my songs to sound like. I'm sure I'll have it figured out soon enough, I don't think my songs are all too different. Every artist does a bit of awkward swimming before they are comfortable in their waters. I'm currently in the process of recording what I hope to be a full length, but I'm not totally sure what will come of it. I have something like 15 songs that I'm experimenting with. It's hard to say what it will be like because the songs haven't been fully developed just yet, but I'll have a few strictly acoustic songs, and others with electric guitar, drums, bass, and maybe piano or something. If I had to compare what I want the album to be to anything, I would say Rocky Votolato's True Devotion. Again, that's just what I would like it to be, whereas it will most likely sound much different because I'm not Rocky.

MBC - By the way, what are your interests besides music?

Morgan - I've been skateboarding as long as I've been into music, and I've been taking photographs for almost as long. I'd really like to shoot for Thrasher or something. I've been drawing with a pen a lot lately too, I just love anything that could be considered art. I also really enjoy meeting people and having conversations that most people these days would not like to be a part of. Being weird is awesome. Larry David is extremely interesting to me, I want to hang out with him all the time. I believe, unquestionably, that Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm are the greatest shows ever. I would place a basket of puppies in a river with violent rapids if I could have a regular role on Curb.

MBC - What do you think about your live acoustic shows? What do you feel when you are on stage and all people’s attention is on you?

Morgan - Um, I've only played one acoustic show, and I think it went terribly. I was a nervous wreck with everyone concentrated on me. I'll have to work on that. As most people know, it is substantially different to play a show being a band and play a show being by yourself with these incredibly personal songs of yours. That's why I am now trying to write lyrics that are a lot less intimate on the surface, and allow the listener to make a special connection for themselves. I greatly admire performers that are comfortable on stage, because it really isn't that big of deal, I just need to be killing inhibition... soon enough.

MBC - And what about touring? Do you have any tour plans for future?

Morgan - I would love to tour. I don't have any plans to do so in the near future. As I mentioned in the previous question, I need to become a better live performer before any touring can happen. I'll be filling in for Kelen on bass in The Story So Far's upcoming Fall US tour, so anyone could come out to one of their shows and check up on how well I'm doing up on stage. Hopefully that will help with my minor anxiety.

MBC - What are your thoughts about playing in the band?

Morgan - I'm not quite sure what you mean by "the band". If you mean "a band", I would love to be in a band. Bands are fun. I want to be in Wilco, I think that would be tremendously wonderful.

Interview: Austin Getz (Turnover)

March, 2011. Five guys from Virginia Beach, pop-punk band called Turnover, released their self-titled debut EP. May, 2011. I was lucky to make an interview with Turnover's vocalist, Austin Getz. Enjoy!

Nick Nefedov[MBC] - To start, Austin introduce to everyone in the band and tell us a bit about them please.

Austin Getz [Turnover] - I'm Austin Getz, I'm 18 and I sing. Kyle Kojan is 18 and does backing vocals and plays rhythm guitar. Danny Dempsey is 18 and plays bass. Casey Getz is 17 and plays drums. Alex Dimaiuat is 16 and plays lead guitar.

MBC - What are band members' interests besides music?

Austin - We all generally love to play music and hangout.

MBC - How did the band first get started?

Austin - The band started in early summer 2009 after I ended an old band of mine called Our Better Years, which was a really bad, typical pop punk band. Kyle, Alex and I all wanted to do something a little more dark with a lot more energy. We got my brother, Casey to drum for us and we started writing and released our first demo in December of 2009, and played shows around the area for about a year. Around September, our first bassist, Mike Sheehy, left the band and Danny joined up. We recorded this first Self Titled EP with Mike Bridgett in February and released it ourselves in March.

MBC - Who would you say some of the bands biggest influences are?

Austin - We all have different influences, I'm really into stuff like Lifetime, Saves the Day, Jawbreaker, Brand New; Danny really likes old emo stuff like American Football, Braid, The Promise Ring; Alex is into Hip Hop and Hardcore more than anything else; and Casey and Kyle really listen to just about everything and are really rounded out.

MBC - Your new EP "Turnover" is great! What can you tell us about it?

Austin - "Turnover" is the result of over a year of writing, trying to really find the sound we wanted. We're all ecstatic about how it turned out.

MBC - When will be new recordings?

Austin - We hope to be recording some new material in the Fall and releasing a split in the winter.

MBC - What about your local scene? How do you think Virginia Beach is a good place to pop-punk bands like "Turnover"?

Austin - The local scene here in Virginia Beach is cool. Everyone is really supportive of good music whether it be hardcore, punk, metal, whatever. We've been really lucky to have such a cool and loyal fan base.

MBC - By the way, if i am not mistaken, you played concert with the Fireworks, Such Gold, MDAM and Living With Lions on May, 8. Share your impressions with us please.

Austin - Yeah, we just played a show with all of those bands. They were all really cool dudes and we hope to play with them again.

MBC – With which bands are you in good relations?

Austin - We've had a lot of awesome bands come through that we've played with: Title Fight, Transit, Hostage Calm, Daytrader, Daylight, Seahaven, Balance and Composure, Tigers Jaw, Man Overboard, Fireworks, Such Gold, Make Do and Mend. It's been unreal to play with all of those bands. They're all making awesome music.

MBC - "You like dogs", right? What do you think about sXe?

Austin - Haha, yeah we're all pretty fond of dogs. As far as straightedge goes, Danny is the only straightedge member of the band, but I think it's an awesome movement. It's really healthy and promotes a great lifestyle. I, personally, don't drink, smoke or do drugs, but I just don't claim any sort of label. As with anything, I think a lot of people take it out of hand and are too intolerant towards those who aren't like them, and that's sad. I know a lot of straightedge kids who are friends with a lot of really NOT straightedge kids. That's how it should be.

MBC - Finally, what about your tour future plans?

Austin - We would love to tour Europe and Asia and the whole world man. It's on the horizon. Spread the music and we hope to see you soon!

Interview: Brian (Kids Icarus)

Melodic Bears Crew: First things first. Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit of what you and other guys do in the band.

Brian: My name is Brian, I sing for the band.

MBC: How did the band first get started?

Brian: “Kids Icarus” was a project that Adam (guitar) and Dave (drums) started a few years ago but never found a singer. I joined in late 2010; we recorded our EP and started playing shows soon thereafter.

MBC: Who would you say some of the bands biggest influences are?

Brian: I think we all draw influence from a lot of different types of music. We all draw from punk bands like “Propaghandi” and “A Wilhelm Scream” as well as heavier music such as “Shai Hulud” and “Obituary” just to name a few.

MBC: I guess that singing for the band is just a one point in your list of interests. What are your interests besides music? What about other band members' interests?

Brian: For me I would say that music takes up most of my time. Whether it be working on personal musical projects, managing our friends in “Half Hearted Hero”, setting up/promoting or attending shows. I think one interest we all collectively have is middle eastern food haha. We all have slight obsessions with this particular cuisine, Adam especially is quite the chef when it comes to this. Don't be surprised if the band breaks up due to an illustrious career in mid eastern cuisine haha.

MBC: Tell us about your local scene, Connecticut, please. Is it a good place to be "Kids Icarus" there?

Brian: I love Connecticut. Some people like to bitch about how the local scenes around here are boring compared to close by New York City or Boston but I have never been so proud of being from here. Especially now with bands such as “Hostage Calm”, “Make Do and Mend”, “The Tired and True”, “Wolves at Bay” and “Manners” currently on tour repping CT.

MBC: With which bands are you in good relationships?

Brian: Ah we have a ton of friends that we are lucky enough to enjoy playing with: “Heartsounds”, “Half Hearted Hero”, “Pentimento”, “Young English”, “Manners”, “The Tired and True”, “Daybreaker”, “Hostage Calm”, “Canvas”, “Latin for Truth”, “Make Do and Mend”, “Caleb Lionheart”... I could go on for hours haha. To me making new friends and building relationships while touring and playing music is one of the best highlights of playing in a band.

MBC: Let's speak about your self-tittled EP. What can you tell us about it? How these songs, music and surely lyrics, were written?

Brian: Well the majority of the music had been written by Adam (guitar) and Dave (drums) a few years ago but the project never really got up in running until later. In 2010 I joined the band and we tracked the EP with our friend Jeff Weed at Sonic Enviroments in Bloomfield, CT. The music and lyrics definitely took shape over a long period of time and we are definitely proud with the end product.

MBC: And maybe you can tell something about how you guys find your own sound? Who or what helped you with sound searching?

Brian: We just write and perform the music that we enjoy playing, I couldn't really pinpoint anything that helped us "find our sound". We'll continue to just write what feels right to us I suppose.

MBC: When can we expect the new songs will be?

Brian: Nothing set in stone as of now but we are always writing new stuff.
